47-year-old Peter Chukwuma, who posed as a pastor was arraigned in a Grade 1 Area Court at Aso Pada in Mararaba, Nasarawa State by the police on Friday for swindling a woman of N9,000.
According to the prosecutor, PC Friday Adaji, the accused and one other now at large tricked one Ms hristiano Ameh of Kabayi village, Mararaba into believing they were men of God.
Ms Christiana who lodged the report at the ‘A’ Division Police Station, Mararaba on Nov. 29. said she was returning from work when the accused came to her and told her he had a message from God that the money she had on her was blood money.
The accused collected N9,000 and one Itel mobile phone valued at N7,000 from Ameh to perform deliverance prayer that will solve all her problems.
Adaji added that the accused disappeared with the money and mobile phone to an unknown destination until he was arrested.
The accused was charged with criminal conspiracy and cheating.
Mr Adaji said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 97 and 322 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, the accused could spend up to three years in prison or an option to pay a fine or both.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty saying, "I am only a labourer, not a pastor."
The judge, Mr Albert Maga, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N20,000 and a surety in like sum and adjourned the case to Dec. 19 for hearing.
