The Vice Chancellor addressed journalists in Abuja on the sidelines of the first end of year dinner and awards night of Unijos class of 80-85 alumni.

“I think the government has done enough to move education forward and the rot of many decades cannot be corrected over night, what I’m going to appeal through you the media is that we should listen to the voice of the nation, the mood of the nation and call off the strike in the overall public interest,” he said.

On the issue of the ultimatum given to ASUU by the government, Mafuyai had this to say: “Minister of education met with the Vice Chancellors, but when the university Council meets, the nation would know the way forward.

“All I’m saying to you is that we have been speaking out, we have been appealing to our colleagues, ASUU to do what we believe should be done, that is calling off the strike,” he said.

Earlier, Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswan, who was the chairman of the event, represented by his Chief of Staff, Professor Saint Gbilekaa said he is delighted that the alumni found it necessary to celebrate the first reunion of the pioneer set of the institution.

He charged them to contribute their quota in changing the educational sector of the country for the better, noting that “it is not as it was during your time, things really have gone bad, even the time, and money and resources is not enough.”

Also speaking the event the national president Unijos Alumni Association, Mr Salau Momodu charged the class of 80-85 alumni to contribute to the development of the university.

He lamented that the permanent site of the university is still under construction and urged the alumni to assist in completing the buildings.

Some of the alumni who received awards at the event included Dr. Peter Idabor, Dr. Emmauel Akabe, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, Dr. Emmanuel Nwosu, Archbishop Emmanuel Egbunu among others.
