Maku Urges Coordinated Effort To Boost Power Supply

Labaran Maku

The Minister of Information and Supervisory Minister of Defence, Mr. Labaran Maku, has emphasised the need for contractors handling the construction of electricity generation and transmission plants in the country to synchronise their efforts in order to ensure a timely and smooth take off without delay.

Speaking yesterday in Kaduna while inspecting the ongoing dual fired (LPFO/Gas) 215Mega Watts Power Plant located at Kudenda Industrial Area, as part of the ongoing National Good Governance Tour (NGGT), Maku observed that the plant should have reached a more appreciable level of completion considering the time spent since the award of the contract.

“Yes there was the issue of relocation but there seems to be a lack of understanding by the contractors that federal government is eager to deliver electricity to Nigerians,” he said.

According to Maku, the plant was strategic not only to Kaduna but to the nation.

He added that an additional 30MW from Gurara was being expected, a development he said would boost the total capacity of the plant to 245MW for onward distribution to Kaduna metropolis.

“The relocation was aimed at ensuring that we tap into the existing gas line passing through this area to generate power and then connect Gurara Hydroplant project when it is completed,” he said.

The minister therefore urged the project consultant and other officials to ensure that the project is completed within the stipulated period.
