Don’t Expect Perfect Elections In 2015 – Jega

Inec

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega has asked Nigerians not to expect next year’s general elections to be perfect, adding that the time-table for the election would be released this week.

Jega said this yesterday when the United States Ambassador to Nigeria Mr. James Enwhistle paid him a courtesy visit at the INEC’s headquarters in Abuja.

“We are not promising a perfect election in 2015, but we are confident that we will do our best,” he said, but added that the conduct of the election would be better than than the 2011 polls.

Jega further stated that the commission would embark on a retreat this week during which the commissioners would prepare time-table for the 2015 polls; budget for the continuous voter registration to be conducted later this year and address other issues that are relevant to the forthcoming polls.

Jega also cited improved staff training and re-organisation as some of the steps taken by INEC to ensure that the 2015 elections were free and fair.

“We have also embarked on strategic planning and improved our relationship with our development partners.

“It is our responsibility under the Electoral Act to do voter education and even political education generally. But it has always been challenging because the resources available to discharge that responsibility are usually insufficient, given the enormity of the task of dealing with a large illiterate population and getting them really understand what to do, not only during voting but also on the larger issues of choosing good candidates and so on. So there is a lot of things the CSOs can do,” he said.

Now waiting for Kanye West's response...

Man Pictured Eating A Muslim As Christians Lynch And Burn 2 Men In Central African Republic

Shocking photographs have emerged of a cannibal by the name of Mad Dog in the Central African Republic who was caught on camera eating the flesh of a lynched Muslim man.

According to DailyMail, 'Mad Dog' - real name Ouandja Magloire - is a cannibal who had sworn to get his revenge on Muslims after his pregnant wife, his sister-in-law and her baby were murdered. Mad Dog claims Muslims were responsible for the murders and he was angry with them.
'They broke down the door and cut my baby in half. I promised I would get my revenge,' he said.
The shocking pictures which you will see after the cut show Mad Dog as he cuts a portion of meat from the body of a murdered Muslim lying burning on a roundabout in the capital of the Central African Republic, with the body of another a few yards away.

Another photograph shows him licking a bloodied knife as he stands over a body, wearing the same T-shirt
he was pictured in during his previous act of cannibalism.

The horrific images were taken in Bangui on Sunday.

According to The Associated Press, the men Mad Dog ate their body parts were killed by residents of the Sango neighbourhood in revenge for the lynching of a taxi driver from Sango a day earlier.
Two other Muslim passers-by escaped to the protection of French and African peacekeeping forces
The agency understands that Magloire didn't take part in the killings, but turned up in the aftermath.

Earlier in the month horrific footage emerged from Bangui of Mad Dog eating the leg of a Muslim who, according to the BBC, was hauled from a bus, battered and then stabbed before being set on fire.
In the aftermath of the incident, Mad Dog grabbed hold of his leg and then began to devour it.

Mad Dog’ had spotted his victim on a minibus and followed him after deciding he looked Muslim. He gathered a crowd of about 20 Christian youths who forced the bus driver to stop and dragged him from the bus.

Without emotion he told the BBC:

'I poured petrol over him. I burned him. I ate his leg, right down the white bone.'

Witnesses did not intervene but recorded the footage on mobile phones, including the act of cannibalism.A video showed his cheeks bulging as he consumes the flesh.

Witness Jean-Sylvestre Tchya told news agency AFP:
'One of the individuals took hold of an arm and went and bought some bread and starting chewing on the flesh, along with his bread. The scene made many people vomit, and some cried out in horror.'

_Lateef_Sulaiman_247x336

According to a story by PM News, officials of the Lagos State Government arrested the man you see above for having s*x with a mad woman.

21-year old man, Lateef Sulaiman, for allegedly scaled a 14-feet fence to gain entrance into the Lagos State Rehabilitation and Training Centre, Majidun area of Ikorodu, Lagos, to have s*x with the said mad woman.

Sulaiman was said to have jumped into the female dormitory around 9.30 p.m. and had s*x with the mad woman before he was arrested and handed over to the taskforce at Alausa.

In his confessional statement at the taskforce headquarters, Sulaiman allegedly said he had had s*x with a mad woman at the rehabilitation centre on five occasions before his arrest, saying that he knew where the female dormitory was because he had gone to the centre in the past to seek employment and had thoroughly studied the environment.

He was arraigned at the Special Offences Court, Alausa in Ikeja for his alleged offence
Sulaiman was slammed with a four-count charge. In the first count charge, he was said to have scaled the 14-feet fence of the rehabilitation home and slept with a mentally ill inmate and thus committed an offence punishable under the laws of Lagos State.

Having pleaded not guilty, he was granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties who must be civil servants and present evidence of tax payment for five years.

Sulaiman could not meet the bail conditions and was remanded at the Badagry Prison.

OJB JEZREEL’S EMOTIONAL THANKSGIVING SERVICE, Says, “My perception of life has changed, I want to impact lives”.

ojb tnx

In appreciation to God for sparing his life through his kidney transplant surgery in India, popular music producer, OJB Jezreel, invited friends, family and well-wishers to St Leos Catholic Church, Ikeja, for a thanksgiving ceremony . The church service was officiated by Msgr. John Aniagwu, Fr. Joseph Anyanwuu and Fr. Tobias Nwafor. During the ceremony held on Sunday, January 19th, 2013, the cleric announced, “This is a gathering of thanksgiving. We have come to thank God that He did not abandon us during the struggle, but brought us into a new year. We need to give him praise,” the priest admonished the congregation.”

When it was time for OJB’s thanksgiving, the maverick producer, who still goes around with a nose guard and walks at a slow pace, moved forward surrounded by his three wives, children and well-wishers including the President of the Collecting Organisation Society of Nigeria (COSON), Mr. Tony Okoroji. Dressed in a white native attire with loafers of the same colour to match, OJB was full of gratitude as he nodded his head vigorously while the priest prayed. Overwhelmed by the significance of the event, OJB could not hold back his emotions as he broke down in tears when he got back to his seat.

OJB stated, “I’m really overwhelmed by all this. Do you know what it means for a person to almost lose his life three times? I’m just really grateful to God. My mum, my daughter and I have all had strange occurrences, but I just thank God.” On if he ever entertained any fear during the whole ordeal,OJB responded, “Even now I’m scared. I mean, I’ve seen a lot of people come out of this and still die.

“My perception of life has really changed; I’m still going to be doing music, but now, I care more about impacting lives.” Speaking about his foundation, he revealed, “The Foundation is set up to assist people with diseases like cancer, hypertension, kidney ailment etc. We subsidise treatment for $10,000 or less.” Also on his forthcoming book, ”The Celebrated Beggar,” Jezreel stated that, “The idea is to let people know that it’s not that easy, even as a celeb. Nothing is permanent; after a while, things change.

For example, I was managing this ailment on my own for three good years without anybody knowing about it. At a point, I just had to cry out for help. I’m being real; I don’t need to deceive myself.” When this reporter posed a question to him on whether his style of music would change together with his perception, OJB answered light-heartedly, “My music is still the same. That’s a different ball game…e fe kin jeun ni (Don’t you want me to eat?).” OJB also debunked rumours circulating on the internet that he has been living a flamboyant life ever since he got back to the country. In his words, “All those stories are false; they’re just speculations. They don’t stay in my house so how do they know what I’m eating? I’m eating the same garri and okro…I’m still living the same life,” he enthused.

On the fact that he is allegedly disappointed in D’banj, he clarified, “I never said I’m disappointed in him. I only said his case was more personal because he was my boy. We launched his career in this country, and not Don Jazzy. We launched JJC in his country, you can ask D’banj when you see him.” Has D’banj now reached out to him, we wanted to know. He said, “No, and I know he wouldn’t do that.

I’m not even interested in that. Why should I give attention to one person who didn’t do anything, over those that did something? What about the guys that went to the internet to support; guys like you who write about it? They are the ones I should be focusing on. Like I said, my thank you is endless.

Irrespective of how much was given.” OJB’s first wife, Mabel Okungbowa, popularly known as Mama J who travelled to India with the producer and donated her kidney was by his side, and we spoke to her about what was going through her mind during the transplant, “There was fear, but I put my hope in God. I hope and pray that God would perfect his healing, so he can do better things.” She also expressed gratitude to the people who supported her husband by donating money and by praying.

According to her, “I know that Nigerians prayed, and I am grateful to everybody for that.” OJB’s second wife, June Okungbowa, also had a word with our reporter. She said, “I’m grateful to God for life; for a second chance. God performed a miracle and he used Nigerians, and foreigners alike to do it. We are grateful to God because it did become very dark, but his love is above everything and he showed it to us; OJB is alive today,” June, who has three kids for OJB said, while asserting that never for once did she entertain any fear as to his recovery. As OJB was driven out of the church to the hospital, many could be seen gathering in groups and thanking God that the beat-maker survived. In the words of one of the well-wishers, “It’s good to see OJB back and I’m confident that we’ll be seeing a new, improved version of him.”

Ramsey Nouah: “My wife’s a triple woman. She’s not like an ordinary woman out there”

ramsey-and-danieline

You have been married for a while, how have you been able to hold your home together?

I must give it to my wife. She’s a triple woman. She’s not like an ordinary woman out there. When some people asked my wife how she copes with an actor husband, I told her to tell them that is why she is a triple woman. The first thing I told her was that, if every woman that says I cannot live with your husband, will actors get married? Will actors ever marry or have a family? I told her it is because you are more than just a woman. Sometimes, she says Ramsey what kind of kissing is that? Na all my market you don go sell finish for camera. One woman came in from Benin to meet my wife that she was the once I married. This woman stayed in our house for three days until I get the police to come and drive her away.

It was such a nasty experience that makes me laugh every time.

On his relationship with Genevieve Nnaji:
It is quite funny. I think everybody just tried to marry Genevieve and I before we actually got close. I didn’t shoot much movies with Genevieve like I did with other actresses. I think I shot five movies with her. I have never had such feeling for her. We were just colleagues who wanted you people to feel the way you are feeling now. It tells you that we played our roles very well.

Why were you dropped as a Glo ambassador?
I don’t know but I think they told us that they switched to musicians. I don’t have to bother myself about why or who dropped me.

POST-ASUU STRIKE: Fresh Crisis Brews in Universities

Fresh Crisis Brews in UniversitiesA fresh crisis is unfolding in the National university system, as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed its members nationwide to refuse filling forms on a new method of payment tagged Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System (IPPIS).

This has been contained in a directive given by the University of Ibadan (UI) branch of ASUU, through its Secretary, Dr. Deji Omole.

The academic union warned the boss of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie to focus on facilities and infrastructures needed in universities rather than pre-occupy himself in alleged fraud-related forms.

The lecturers further cautioned the NUC not to distract them now that they were trying to cover lost grounds occasioned by the five month strike.

Declaring that the method of payment negated the principle of university autonomy agreed upon since 1992, the union said:
“Our attention has been drawn to an NUC Circular directing University Staff to fill IPPIS forms. This is to remind you that the Union’s position on IPPIS has not changed.
“Until NEC reviews its earlier decision, no ASUU should fill the form. NEC is to discuss this issue in February and give further directive. United we bargain, divided we beg.”
The Chairman, UI Chapter, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye also backed position of ASUU:
“Integrated payment system does not take into consideration the peculiarity of the work of academic staff and it negates the principle of autonomy which ASUU won since 1992.
“IPPS negates the principle of University autonomy that ASUU fought for. We are employed by our respective governing councils and not centrally by NUC. For salaries to be paid from Abuja is strange to world university system apart from the dangers inherent in it.

“IPPS does not take into consideration the peculiarity of our job. Now that we are even paid by our universities, members who have problems with their salaries face difficulties before getting it resolved let alone salaries being paid from Abuja.

“They are talking of ghost workers when salaries have not been paid from Abuja but somebody in front of the system in Abuja will manufacture fictitious names and pay themselves. It will give room for fraud and make life difficult for our profession and members. We say no to IPPS.”
It would be recalled that the university lecturers called off strike on December 16, 2013, ending almost 6-months-long crisis in the educational sector of the county.

Men Who Poured Pepper Into Woman, Daughter’s Private Part Arrested At Oba’s Palace In Lagos

ejigbo

Saharareporters has learned of the arrest of all the perpetrators of a bestial torture and sodomy of three women in Ejigbo which happened February last year.

The arrest of the sodomy gang, Saharareporters was reliably informed, happened at the palace of Oba Moruf Adisa Ojoola of Ejigbo earlier today.

The arrest was possible due to immense pressure on Oba Moruf himself, he reportedly got all the men assembled at his palace around 11pm Saturday night.

The gathering of the gang by Oba Moruf followed a closure of the market yesterday, which prevented the market men and women from carrying out their trading activities until the perpetrators were identified and brought to book.

The gang’s torture and sodomizing of a lady by thrusting of a bottle of ground pepper and sticks in her private part had resulted in her death, two months after. She was later identified as “Juliana” by her father, a palm wine tapper, who revealed that he also lost a toddler in the incidence as his wife, mother of the baby while being tortured by the gang was not allowed to attend to the baby.

In addition to torture, the gang also destroyed the palm wine tapper’s house and banished him from the community, after he was made to pay N50,000 as fine to secure the release of his wife and two daughters.

On Thursday, last week, Oba Moruf was invited by the Lagos Assembly Committee regarding the investigation into the crime. A source familiar with the meeting of the Oba with the committee told our correspondent that the Oba’s demeanor at the meeting was cooperative, and he did not spend much time. The previous day, Wednesday, the Iyaloja (Ejigbo Market women leader) also visited the committee on invitation. She was accompanied by her husband, who pledged support toward the investigation.

The Babaloja, who allegedly received a fine from the palm wine tapper and also supervised his banishment, did not honor an invitation by the committee. He gave the excuse that he had injury on his leg. But sources in the market said the Babaloja may have had the injury when he scaled a fence to escape arrest by a police team that visited the market for investigation last week.

At a public hearing upon constitution of the Lagos Assembly committee, the police, the local government chairman, market women and other members of the Ejigbo community had denied knowledge of the crime, even as sources from the community insisted the crime happened in the public glare.

As efforts progressed into finding the perpetrators, the police, through its DPO in Ejigbo, CSP Oliver Abbey had clearly shown complicity and laxity by claiming it doubted the event happened at all, evidently by doing nothing about it. CSP Abbey was later deployed out of the area after his compromised position became clear to his superiors.

It is expected that the arrested gang would be tried for the crime of murder, and the illegal sum collected from Mr. Freeman, the palm wine tapper to secure his wife and daughters recovered.

Mr. Freeman’s family is also expected to be rehabilitated.

AY's Deliverance Comedy Skit: Jim Iyke Replies Again, SEE What He Said

In a new comedy skit to promote his Easter show, popular Nigerian comedian AY mimicked Jim Iyke's deliverance which caused quite a stir last year.

Jim Iyke not too pleased with the joke took to his twitter account to condemn it.

However, AY apologised to Jim for making jest of him and Helen Paul who was the one being delivered in the skit said they had no intention of hurting Jim.

Well Jim Iyke has accepted the apology and even went as far as declaring some love for the Comedian.

'I read blog comments and it depresses me" Halima Abubakar says

The actress admitted in a new interview with The Netng that she reads stories about herself on blogs and the comments make her sad and depresses her.
That’s like physical bullying. Online, they are invisible. I believe if you have a problem with me, you should approach me. But if you go online and comment as anonymous or use a strange name, you are still bringing yourself down. Yes, you would make me feel sad, but the damage will not be permanent, but temporary until I am strong enough not to read those comments again. I am going to say it that I am not one of those actresses that say they don’t read blogs. I do. I have been reading blogs for the past five years or so, but I have never commented. Sometimes I am pushed to insult everybody there and comment under anonymous. But then I tell myself, well, they would always remain anonymous while I stay relevant. And so, I bear most of the insults and try not to be bothered about them. It was not easy. I was depressed for a long time because of things like that. I just felt that people didn’t like me. I didn’t understand how people could still hate me even when I know I am one of the nicest people in Nollywood. Continue...
I am not disrespecting anybody, I am just saying that even if someone has hurt me several times, I will still be nice to the person. People just go ahead and bash me for no reasons. They don’t even know me and they are saying this and that. Before, I will cry and cry and get depressed. But now, I don’t even bother myself anymore. They don’t know what I’m going through and they don’t know my story.
Which of the stories would you say hurt you the most?
Amongst the many, there was one referring to people who patronize a particular hotel on the island with a politician, and my name was the headline of the publication. If you are saying you saw Halima, then you should have proof. I have never visited that hotel called Four Points. I had my premiere at Oriental Hotel. If I wanted to use Four Points I would have. I hate it when the media knowingly writes things that are not true. They know they are lying but they still go ahead to write because of the pull down syndrome. If you are friends of these selected people, they can make their own people hate you. Before you know it, the person will be writing nonsense and gossiping about you. Love is not like that. Just because you don’t love me shouldn’t be an excuse to attack me. You don’t know the things that I go through everyday. I don’t know everybody’s problems but I know mine. So, it is unfair that they will take whatever frustration out on other people for no reason.

What Were the Gains for the Nations Which Legalised Same-s*x Marriage?

On January 7, 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan has signed the Nigerian Same-s*x Marriage Prohibition Bill into a law. Since the enactment of that Act, some Nigerians and nationals from Western countries have expressed their displeasure and opposition to the President and Nigerian National Assembly.

gayanti

Some of these opponents of the new law have described the statute as draconian and obnoxious while others among them, including the American and British Foreign Secretaries, John Kerry and William Hague respectively, see it as a direct encroachment upon the fundamental rights of Nigerian gay community and a contradiction to the provisions of Nigerian 1999 constitution and international conventions.

To some of these opponents, the new law is repressive because, according to them, nobody is supposed to suffer any discrimination on the grounds of his/her s*xual orientation and they have even expressed fear that the Act will cause untold violence, persecution, and prejudice in Nigeria.  Others among them have even described millions of Nigerians who support the criminalization of homosexuality and same-s*x marriage in Nigeria as barbaric and slaves to tradition, religion, and morality.

Without mincing words, these negative reactions against the new Act, at best, represent obvious naivety, ignorance, western hypocrisy, enslaved western mentality, wool-pulling defence mechanism, and agnostic philosophical chicaneries on the part of the critics. In the first place,  these opponents, who usually proclaim themselves as gay-rights activists or defenders of the civil liberties of homosexuals, must be re-educated on the following truisms: In 1795, a legendary Anglo-Irish political philosopher and theorist, Edmund Burke, who was also the father of modern liberal conservatism and representative democracy, taught the whole world a remarkable socio-political lesson to this effect, “THE ONLY THING NECESSARY FOR THE TRIUMPH OF EVIL IS FOR GOOD MEN TO DO NOTHING.”

The lesson Nigerian self-made gay-rights defenders and their western backers should learn from Edmund Burke is that the prevalence or luxuriant growth of an evil, an immorality, a behavioural disorder, an illegality in any nation is an indication of the dormancy and inaction of good men and women in that country. Burke’s teaching equally means that if good people in a country do something, any societal evil or disorder that crops up in that nation will abate, but if they do nothing, it will increase and continue to multiply in enormity. It further implies that it takes the failure of good, honest, God-fearing country men and women to take positive and purposeful actions for political, social, moral, and behavioural corruption to thrive in any country. It also means that anything done by good men and women in a society to eradicate a particular societal malady or moral corruption which fails to curb or uproot it, is futile and as good as nothing. This eloquent and world-widely accepted wisdom of Edmund Burke was given an added stamp of authority and endorsement by Albert Einstein, a Jewish great scientist and a superlative mind in intellectual philosophy who won the 1921 Nobel laurel in physics, in the following words, “THE WORLD IS A DANGEROUS PLACE TO LIVE, NOT BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE EVIL, BUT BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE WHO DON’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.”

In simple analysis, these two great men of history wanted the world to know that it does not take thieves,  homosexuals, gays, paedophiles, public property looters, or fraudsters, murderers, prostitutes etc. to mitigate the rampancy of stealing, homosexuality, same-s*x marriage, paedophilia, prostitution, murder and corruption in a society; it rather takes the practical interventions, passionate actions, and conscious vigilance of honest, good people to keep such evils, such behavioural disorders, such social anomalies at bay.

Another great wisdom handed down to humanity in the 19th century is the classical teachings of James Anthony Froude, a quintessential English historian, novelist, biographer, and editor, who in 1849 advised human persons and societies in this manner, “ACTIONS ARE GOVERNED BY MOTIVES.

THE POWER OF MOTIVES DEPENDS ON CHARACTER AND CHARACTER ON THE ORIGINAL FACULTIES AND TRAINING RECEIVED FROM THE MEN OR THINGS AMONG WHICH A PERSON IS BRED” According to this teaching, those who commit evils, immoralities, or illegalities do so as a result of the nature of their mental breeding, learning, nurture, and/or environmental influences.

Froude continued, “OPINIONS ALTER, MANNERS CHANGE, CREEDS RISE AND FALL, BUT THE MORAL LAW IS WRITTEN ON THE TABLETS OF ETERNITY.” According to this message, the bedrock, the anchor, the engine, power, the meat and marrow of human life, any society, and any legal rules is the moral rules. This further implies that human life which is devoid of moral scruples has no essence and no meaning. By necessary extension, it means societal development or civilization is no development or civilization without morality.

Continuing, Froude mused, “OUR FAILURES ARE ERRORS, NOT CRIMES – NATURE’S DISCIPLINE WITH WHICH GOD TEACHES US; AND AS LITTLE VIOLATIONS OF HIS LAW, OR RENDERING US GUILTY IN HIS EYES, AS THE ARTIST’S EARLY BLUNDERS, OR EVEN ULTIMATE AND ENTIRE FAILURES, ARE LAYING STORE OF GUILT ON HIM.” The understanding in this teaching is that what fails or ruins a man, a woman, a society, a nation is lack of nature’s discipline. This further means that disobedience to natural/moral rules of life and conduct is more destructive to a nation than crimes. It also means that crimes are the essential by-products of lack of natural discipline or control. It further implies that for a nation to survive and grow, it must instil natural/moral discipline in its citizens.

I must equally take recourse to Confucius, a legendary Chinese philosopher whose wise teachings more monumentally influenced modern Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, and many western countries’ thought than any other sage of the old. In 479 B.C. and in his approach to social harmony, prosperity, and defined moral obligations between individuals and social systems, Confucius said, “TO PUT THE WORLD IN ORDER, WE MUST FIRST PUT THE NATION IN ORDER; TO PUT THE NATION IN ORDER, WE MUST PUT THE FAMILY IN ORDER; TO PUT THE FAMILY IN ORDER, WE MUST CULTIVATE OUR PERSONAL LIFE, AND TO CULTIVATE OUR PERSONAL LIFE, WE MUST FIRST SET OUR HEART RIGHT.”

According to Confucius, to effect a positive change in a nation, the citizens of that country must start at its bottom or basis, which is the individual persons living in families governed by natural rules of life.

He taught that the citizens must organize and tame their individual lives well and set their hearts in order. This means that once the bottom of a country (the persons in individual families) is well organized and tamed in morality, the top of that country ( the government) will automatically be well tamed in natural discipline without which there will be no legal, political, economic etc. discipline in the society. This further means that if the families in a nation are made up of thieves, paedophiles, gays, prostitutes, lesbians, those who have s*x with animals, with their children, with their sisters, brothers etc., the civil leadership of that society will be constituted by thieves, homosexuals, paedophiles, prostitutes, bestial and incestuous human beings and the country will be drowned in immorality and illegality.

This therefore means that what people do (whether adults or non-adults) in their private lives, homes, bedrooms should be a source of interest and concern to a right-thinking human society because people’s private breeding/life determines their public/official or communal behaviour. I don’t know of any Nigerian, any American or British today whose intellectual and philosophical teachings and thoughts are as legendary, as world-widely respected, honoured, as world-widely accepted and embraced as those of Confucius.

In the light of the aforementioned teachings and lessons, one may now ask: What gain can humanity derive from homosexuality and same-s*x marriages? Are homosexuality and same-s*x marriage breaches of Nature’s discipline? If yes, should Nigerians condone or acquiesce to their practice in Nigeria? Can human right enure or exist in acts which are violations of Nature’s discipline or in illegality? Are homosexuality and same-s*x marriage threats to human procreation? Is human race in danger of extinction if all nations decide to adopt same-s*x marriages? Who actually is to blame for the criminalization of homosexuality in Nigeria? Is sodomy not a homosexual act?

'If I wasnt Fela's son, I would have gone farther than this' - Seun Kuti

The youngest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti and new father Seun Kuti tells City People mag about the limitations his dad's name has brought to his music career....
"I dont believe that being Fela's son has helped my career. Yes I am fela's son. Yes I grew up to love music through him. Most people believe it's easier looking in, when you are out.
Everything just seems easier that way. But I keep saying that the fact that I am Fela's son, for me it didn't really help me musically. The fact that I am Fela's son has brought me more stress than good fortune. I believe if I wasn't Fela's son with my amount of talent and what I have been able to achieve, I would have gone far. What people see in Nigeria is 'Hey, he is just like his father. Who is seun? Oh, he is Fela's son' and that is it. They dont bother to look deep into what I am doing. I see them singing high praises of people here that for me, musically, I dont see what they are singing. What I am saying is Yes I am Fela's son but it still took me 10 years to get my record deal after his death.
Me I believe I have paid my dues. There was no Fela's name helping me get anything. My brother, Femi, won that lottery, I have to say. There was already one Kuti out there. It's like that with music families. There is only one person that is pushed by the name. The others have to strive. Being Fela's son, especially when you have a brother that is already out there, will make it difficult for you after him. What that does to you is that they listen, but before they listen, they have already set the standard so high. I am lucky that still with all the talk and comparisons all the time, I am still able to break my own barriers and we are doing our own thing. The band and I, and we have achieved great success. Since the first album, internationally, we have been able to close that chapter of people comparing us.
They now know that we are our own force. Right now the band has made more money, played in more places than they ever did under my dad.
