Namibia 2014: Super Falcons Qualify

The Super Falcons have secured qualification for the next African Women Championship to be held in Namibia after their opponents Sierra leone withdrew due to financial concerns

The Sierra Leonians cited lack of funds as the reason for their withdrawal. The championship, the 9th in the series, will hold in Namibia between Oct.11 and Oct. 25.

Ademola Olajire, Assistant Director, Media, Nigeria Football Association (NFA), said this in a statement he issued in Abuja.

The statement said Super Falcons, the national female team, were scheduled to play Sierra Leone in February for a slot in the final qualifying round.

“Both teams were due to square up in a qualifying duel in February. “Sierra Leone’s voluntary exit means that the Falcons will now have to wait for the winner of the fixture between Kenya and Rwanda to know their final round opponent.’’

The letter of withdrawal was addressed to the General Secretary, Confederation of African Football (CAF), Hicham El Amrani and copied to NFA by Sierra Lone Football Association.

“I write with regrets to inform you of our decision to withdraw our national female football team from participating in the aforementioned championship.

“This decision, which was reached at our last Executive Committee, is due to the present financial status of our Football Association. “The financial situation makes it difficult to honour our proposed fixture against Nigeria in February this year.`
